FoxIt Reader 2.3

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

If you are a fan of Adobe PDF reader alternatives then you have probably heard of or run FoxIt reader.

As far as they go it is a great stable, low resource hogging alternative that until now was missing some of the features of the bigger named readers like tabbed browsing, multimedia playback, bookmarks etc.

These and more have been included in version 2.3, available now, which is well worth the upgrade. Download it here!

AVG 8.0 Free released

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

The other month Grisoft updated its AVG anti virus suite to include; link scanning, anti-spyware, and anti-root kit software.

So now it time for AVG Free to get a face lift too, though it does not receive all the new features (this will cost you US$35+) you do get the addition of spyware protection. It still has real-time protection, daily updates, and complete system scans that is has become known for.

It is worth having a look at whether you run AVG Free or not! (I use it!)

We can all breath a sigh of relief. Service Pack 3 is finally here and couldn’t be better timed. I am sure most have been running RCs and the final release for a while now but for those that are not, the wait is over!

Service Pack 3

It will be ‘official’ on the 29th of April (that’s tomorrow btw) though a few sites have had it on offer for a little while now.  Softpedia and MajorGeek being the main providers, along with torrents of course.

Silly U.S. Patents

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

I think everyone has heard of a patent for some odd and unbelievably useless product. (ie. the patent of a small figure made of rubber bands or how about a cucumber freaking sandwich!)

Well there are literally hundreds of the things and patentlysilly.com has been nice enough to collect and share just about all of them… from the US that is.

Good for a laugh.

I am sure most people have been required to enter their email address into a website to be allowed to see content, be it a membership or what ever.

The catch, you need to use your email to received the confirmation email… well not any more!

Once you hit ‘Get temp email address’ your are given a simple inbox and the option to extend the life of your new account, 15 minutes at a time.

Domain name sold for US$2.6m

Monday, April 7th, 2008

A man in the US has just sold his domain name, Pizza.com, for a whopping $2.6m after an anonymous bid was put forward.

Chris Clark, 43, has been paying his annual $20 fee for the site since 1994 when he originally purchased it in a hope to win a client in the pizza industry.

His only regret was that he had not purchased more domains back in the early days of the Internet.

Though I am sure he will survive ok on just the one…

Run files from Firefox

Friday, April 4th, 2008

I am sure most users of Firefox have noticed that the option to “run” a download is not available and users are forced to download before opening.

This has led to  Jeremy Gillick developing ‘Open Download‘ a simple addon for Firefox (pre version 3) which fixes this problem.

As far as I know there is yet to be an alternative that is Firefox 3 friendly.
